Research On Children Presents Ethical Dilemmas

The thorny issue of conducting aesculapian research on children is one of the most difficult ethical debates in health aid today.

In the Pediatric Ethics, Issues, & Commentary column of the July-August 2008 progeny of Pediatric Nursing, author Pam Pieper examines two schools of thought regarding this controversial topic. Central to the debate is whether or not a child's acquiescence to participate in enquiry should be mandated, considering that in some cases, the child may be unable or too offspring to give such acquiescence.

Pieper presents two theories: deontology, an "ethical stance, where one's actions are based on what is morally rectify, irrespective of the consequences." This viewpoint states such research is ethical only when when it potentially benefits the fry and includes the child's consent. The second possibility, utilitarianism, focuses on a course of action that results in the superlative good for the superlative number of people. In other words, research that benefits many children simply possibly puts a few at peril is justified by the final final result. Under this theory, acquiescence is non mandated.

"Children have a great deal been denied the benefits of enquiry advancements because of restrictions against their participation in research," Pieper writes. She adds that some children may take to take part in enquiry and that there should not be sweeping restrictions that contract away their autonomy, specially when others could benefit. Utilitarianism is the more widely accepted perspective, she says, and even when children can't assent, if parental permit and earmark safeguards ar added into the mix, they should still be given the opportunity to participate in studies.

NEW YORK -- B.J. Novak could presently be departure from pushing paper to fighting Nazis.

The WMA-repped Novak is best known for his role on the NBC hit series, where he plays other temp Ryan. Novak too has written several episodes of the show and served as co-executive producer.

On the large screen, Novak has had small parts in the Sept. 11 drama "Reign Over Me" and Judd Apatow's "Knocked Up."

Scheduling is less likely to be a problem for Novak than it might be for other television actors; he has had a less regular role on "The Office" since his character was promoted in the twenty-five percent season to run the Dunder Mifflin corporate office in New York.

'Kung Fu Panda,' 'Zohan' ready to face off

A couple of film characters adept at martial arts and anatomy-defying leg splits face off at movie theaters this weekend.

Paramount unspools DreamWorks Animation's family feature "Kung Fu Panda," features a voice cast including Jack Black and Angelina Jolie, while Sony sends out the Adam Sandler comedy "You Don't Mess With the Zohan." Both are considered potential candidates to open the weekend atop the domestic boxoffice.

"Panda" -- DWA's penultimate film in conventional CGI before a big 3-D push by the studio -- looks like a lock to ring up at least $40 million domestically. "Zohan," whose topliner plays an Israeli commando-turned-New York hairdresser, should bow with at least $35 million but could spar with "Panda" for the frame's top spot if appeal proves broader than the male-skewing fan base for most Sandler releases.

"Men of all ages are totally up for it, (and) women have become enlisted as we have continued the campaign," Sony distribution president Rory Bruer said.

Indeed, Paramount executives aren't ready to start polishing the weekend gold medal just yet.

"I think they're going to be neck and neck," Paramount vice chairman Rob Moore said of the frame's wide openers.

There are at least a couple of historical comparisons for each of the No. 1 wannabes.

"Panda" compares with DWA's May 2006 family comedy "Over the Hedge," which bowed at $38.5 million en route to $155 million domestically, and June 2007's Pixar/Disney film "Ratatouille," which opened with $47 million and grossed $206.4 million all told.

"Zohan" will be measured against Sandler's June 2006 comedy "Click," which Sony debuted with $40 million on the way to $137.4 domestically, and June 2007's Warner Bros.' heist pic "Ocean's Thirteen," which unspooled with $36.1 million and grossed $117.2 million overall.

Meanwhile, last weekend's chart-topper "Sex and the City" from Warner Bros./

New Line seems likely to take a big plunge during its sophomore session, but the female-skewing comedy still could pull in $25 million or so this session. That should give it a bronze-medal finish for the frame and likely just outperform the waning "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" from Paramount/Lucasfilm.

Industry officials hope the holdovers manage a solid enough weekend to combine with the two big openers for another nice notch in the win column.

Collectively, the domestic boxoffice was up about 27% last weekend compared with the same frame a year ago. That has spurred renewed hope that the summer boxoffice might heat up sufficiently to cope more successfully for the balance of the season with difficult year-ago comparisons with summer 2007, a record scorcher.

Cable Close To Overtaking Broadcast In Total Sales

Cable channels overall made greater gains than the broadcast networks in selling
spots to advertisers during the "upfront" season, the New York Times observed
today (Tuesday), noting that cable networks sold $8 billion worth of commercial time
to ad buyers -- a rise of 7-8 percent from last year -- while the broadcast networks
sold about $9.1-9.2 worth of spots, up just 1 percent from last year. (Of course,
there are only four major broadcast networks -- and two smaller ones -- while there
are well over 100 cable networks.)

When Comedies Compete

It was bad enough when Warner Bros. and Paramount discovered that the jam-packed summer release schedule left them no alternative but to open two comedies against one another this weekend. Now, to compound the problem, they have discovered that buzz and reviews about both comedies, Get Smart and The Love Guru have been dreadful. (The best thing going for The Love Guru may have been the free publicity generated by attacks directed against it by activist Hindus who have complained that it mocks their religion.) Box office forecasters are predicting that Get Smart will lead the weekend with $30-35 million in ticket sales. The Love Guru is expected to earn $20-25 million -- a far cry from the the $73.1 million that Mike Myers's last film, Austin Powers in Goldmember, took in when it opened six years ago.

Sheriff to Shaq: Gimme That Badge Back!

The Sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona thinks Shaq-Fu better shut up! And now he's pulled the NBA baller's special deputy's badge because of his rapping rant against Kobe Bryant.

Last January, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio made the Phoenix Suns star a special deputy, and then promoted him to a ceremonious colonel earlier this month. "I want his two badges back," Arpaio told the AP, "Because if any one of my deputies did something like this, they're fired. I don't condone this type of racial conduct."

Arpaio, known as "America's Toughest Sheriff," is best known for forcing inmates to wear pink undies and work on a chain gang.

Few R&B singers have endured tragical travails on the massive storey that Etta James has and remain on earth to talk or so it. The lady's no shrinkage violet; her autobiography, Rage to Survive, describes her past (including legion do drugs addictions) in sordid item.

Only her personal problems have rarely moved her tattle. James has hung in there from the eld of R&B and doo wop in the mid-'50s through soul's late-'60s prime and right up into the '90s and 2000s (where her 1994 disc Mystery story Lady paid loving jazz-based tribute to i of her idols, Billie Holiday). Etta James' voice has deepened o'er the years, coarsened more than than a little, simply still conveys noteworthy passion and pain.

Jamesetta Hawkins was a baby gospel singing prodigy, telling in her Los Angeles Baptist church choir (and over the wireless) when she was only five days old under the care of Professor James Earle Hines. She affected to San Francisco in 1950, shortly teaming with deuce other girls to form a vocalizing radical. When she was 14, bandleader Johnny Otis gave the trio an audition. He in particular dug their answer birdsong to Hank Ballard & the Midnighters' "Work With Me Annie."

Against her mother's wishes, the young vocaliser embarked for L.A. to record "Roll With Me Henry" with the Otis ring and vocaliser Richard Berry in 1954 for Modern Records. Otis upside-down her number one name to devise her stage handle and dubbed her vocal radical the Peaches (besides Etta's sobriquet). "Roll With Me Henry," renamed "The Wallflower" when some radiocommunication programmers objected to the original title's connotations, topped the R&B charts in 1955.

The Peaches dropped from the tree short thenceforth, but Etta James kept on vocalizing for Modern end-to-end lots of the tenner (ofttimes under the supervising of saxophonist Maxwell Davis). "Good Rockin' Daddy" besides did rather well for her afterwards in 1955, simply worth follow-ups such as "Cleaning woman" and "Bad Lover" (the latter a fiery cradle cut in New Orleans with Lee Allen on adolphe Sax) failed to catch on.

James II landed at Chicago's Chess Records in 1960, signing with their Argo subsidiary. Immediately, her transcription calling kicked into heights appurtenance; non only if did a mate of duets with her then-boyfriend (Moonglows lead singer Harvey Fuqua) chart, her have sides (outset with the tortured lay "All I Could Do Was Cry") chased each other up the R&B lists as comfortably. Leonard Chess viewed James as a classy lay isaac Bashevis Singer with pop crossover potential drop, financial support her with lush violin orchestrations for 1961's pleasant-tasting "At Last" and "Trust in Me." But James' rougher slope wasn't forsaken -- the gospel-charged "Something's Got a Hold on Me" in 1962, a kinetic 1963 unrecorded LP (Etta James Rocks the House) cut at Nashville's New Era Club, and a blues-soaked 1966 pas de deux with childhood sidekick Sugar Pie De Santo, "In the Basement," ensured that.

Although Chess hosted its have killer house band, James traveled to Rick Hall's Fame studios in Muscle Shoals in 1967 and emerged with one of her all-time classics. "State Mama" was a searing slice of eudaimonia Southern soul that contrasted markedly with some other standout from the same roger Huntington Sessions, the spine-chilling ballad "I'd Rather Go Blind." Despite the death of Leonard Chess, Etta James remained at the label into 1975, experimenting toward the end with a more than rock-based advance.

Thither were some mighty lean days, both personally and professionally, for Miss Peaches. But she got back on track recording-wise in 1988 with a set for Island, Seven-spot Year Itch, that reaffirmed her Southern soul supremacy. Her following albums have been a varied lot -- 1990's Relieved to My Guns was contemporaneous in the extreme; 1992's Jerry Wexler-produced The Right Time, for Elektra, was glibly soulful, and her almost other '90s outings birth explored jazz directions. In 1998, she as well issued a vacation record album, Etta James Christmas. She was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2001, and in 2003 received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. That year also sawing machine the release of her Let's Roll album, followed in 2004 by a CD of raw blues performances, Blues to the Bone, both on RCA Records. James then shifted gears and released an album of pop standards, All the Way, on RCA in 2006.

In concert, Etta James is a impudent, no-holds-barred performer whose suggestive stage antics sometimes edge on the repugnant. She's paid her dues many times over as an R&B and soul initiate; long may she bear on to shock the naive.
